Hearing Impairment

Every parent wants to care of his newborn properly and to prevent any mistake. That is why is necessary to watch your baby carefully and to follow development signs. Early detection of such signs can prevent to have bigger problems later. That way you will help your baby to grow and develop properly.

Hearing impairment is a problem that occurs in some number of babies and early detection is very important. If you detect hearing problems early, that will enable you to make the right decision and to react at the right time and consult doctor about signs you noticed. It is good if you can do the screening right after the baby is born which will save time for you and the baby in case those tests are positive and there is hearing impairment.

Hearing impairment can be at early stage removed by surgery or a number of hearing aids, depending on a problem. The most important is to do that as soon as possible, which is the best way to help your baby grow without hearing problems and develop her speech properly. There are a number of screening tests available and some of them are cardiac response audiometry, alteration of sucking patterns, respiration audiometry, movement in response to sounds, startle in response to sounds, measuring of acoustic reflexes and many more. That way doctors can detect hearing problems and decide what procedures your baby may need.

The most accurate test is the auditory brain stem response or shortly ABR which is an audiometry test that provides accurate results which are compared with other hearing tests mentioned above. One more method of screening is evoked otoacoustic emissions or shortly EOAE test which is very quick, noninvasive and also not an expensive test where is checked cochlear function.

Even in your home you will probably notice if your baby is suffering from some hearing problem. The most important is to pay attention to how your baby reacts to sounds in different situations. If baby reacts to sudden noise and loud sounds moving face towards sound, then it means your baby’s hearing is probably fine. But if you notice that there is no reaction to such noise, you should consult a doctor and make sure how good is your baby’s hearing.

If tests show that your baby’s hearing is not well, there is a number of hearing aids that will help your child to hear normally. There are also schools for children with hearing problems where they learn sign language, reading lips and to speak which means that even a baby with hearing problem can lead one normal life if you as parent support him and accept child as it is, because your love is what your child needs first.
